1. About This Policy

At UMM, we're all in on protecting the privacy and security of our community. We're creators and storytellers like you — so we completely know and respect how important privacy is.

For all our services, the data controller — the company that's responsible for your privacy — is UNUM, Inc. (doing business as "UMM").

This Policy describes the types of information we may collect from you or that you may provide when you use our websites and mobile applications (collectively, the "Platform") and our practices for collecting, using, maintaining, protecting, and disclosing that information.

2. Children Under the Age of 16

Our Platform is not intended for children under 16 years of age. No one under age 16 may provide any personal information to or on the Platform. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16.

If you are under 16, do not use or provide any information on this Platform or through any of its features, register on the Platform, make any purchases through the Platform, use any of the interactive or public comment features of this Platform, or provide any information about yourself to us.

If we learn we have collected or received personal information from a child under 16 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information. If you believe we might have any information from or about a child under 16, please contact us at legal@unum.la.

We collect several types of information from and about users of our Platform:

Information You Provide

  • Profile Content: Information you provide when filling in forms, posting materials, or using our services

User Contributions

You may provide information to be published or displayed ("posted") on public areas of the Platform, or transmitted to other users or third parties ("User Contributions"). Your User Contributions are posted and transmitted at your own risk.

Important: Although you may set certain privacy settings for your profile (public or private), please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable. We cannot control the actions of other users with whom you may choose to share your User Contributions.

As you navigate through and interact with our Platform, we may use automatic data collection technologies to collect certain information about your equipment, browsing actions, and patterns.

Information Collected Automatically

  • Usage Details: Details of your visits to our Platform, including traffic data, resources accessed, and usage patterns

Technologies We Use

Web Beacons

Pages of our Platform and our emails may contain small electronic files known as web beacons (also referred to as clear gifs, pixel tags, and single-pixel gifs) that permit us to count users who have visited those pages or opened an email and for other related website statistics.

Global Privacy Control

We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. When we detect a GPC signal from your browser, we treat it as a valid request to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information under applicable privacy laws.

Third-Party Tracking

Some content or applications on the Platform are served by third parties, including advertisers, ad networks, content providers, and application providers. We do not control these third parties' tracking technologies or how they may be used.

When someone visits a user's public profile on our Platform (a "Profile Visitor"), we collect certain information to provide analytics to the profile owner and to improve our services.

  • Referring source (how they found the profile)

  • Pages viewed and links clicked

  • Time spent on the profile

Information Profile Visitors May Provide

Profile Visitors may choose to provide additional information when interacting with a profile, such as:

  • Email address (when subscribing to updates)

  • Payment information (when making purchases)

  • Contact information (when submitting forms)

This information is shared with the profile owner as part of our service. Profile owners are responsible for their own use of this information in compliance with applicable laws.

6. How We Use Your Information

We do not sell your personal information for monetary consideration. However, under certain privacy laws (like CCPA), some data sharing for advertising purposes may be considered a "sale" or "sharing." You can opt out of this in your privacy settings or by using Global Privacy Control.

8. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which we collect it, such as to provide you with the services you have requested, and for the purpose of satisfying any legal, accounting, contractual, or reporting requirements that apply to us.

When determining retention periods, we consider:

We strive to provide you with choices regarding the personal information you provide to us.

Tracking Technologies and Advertising

You can also enable Global Privacy Control (GPC) in your browser to automatically opt out of tracking. If you disable or refuse cookies, please note that some parts of this site may be inaccessible or not function properly.

Promotional Communications

If you do not wish to receive promotional emails from us, you can opt out by:

  • Clicking the "unsubscribe" link in any promotional email

This opt-out does not apply to transactional communications (e.g., account notifications, billing information).

Accessing and Correcting Your Information

You can review and change your personal information by logging into the Platform and visiting your account profile page. You may also contact us to request access to, correct, or delete any personal information that you have provided to us.

If you delete your User Contributions from the Platform, copies may remain viewable in cached and archived pages, or might have been copied or stored by other Platform users.

10. Data Security

We have implemented measures designed to secure your personal information from accidental loss and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure. All information you provide to us is stored securely using standard industry practices. Any payment transactions and highly sensitive information will be encrypted.

The safety and security of your information also depends on you. Where we have given you (or where you have chosen) a password for access to certain parts of our Platform, you are responsible for keeping this password confidential. We ask you not to share your password with anyone.

Be careful what you post or send through our Platform. Information you share in public areas may be viewed by any user of the Platform. The transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted to our Platform.

Only you, or someone legally authorized to act on your behalf, may make a request related to your personal information. You may only submit a request to know twice within a 12-month period.

We will respond within 45 days of receiving your request. If we need more time (up to an additional 45 days), we will inform you in writing.

We do not sell personal information for monetary consideration. However, some data sharing with advertising partners may constitute a "sale" or "sharing" under CCPA. To opt out:

Shine the Light
